Celebrate the King's birthday in Kuala Lumpur

Travellers planning a stay in a Kuala Lumpur hotel this summer may find the city in buoyant mood as Malaysia celebrates the King's birthday.

Locals will come together to mark the birthday of Yang di-Pertuan Agong, or the King of Malaysia, on June 6th, with a series of celebratory activities taking place.

The occasion is celebrated as a national holiday on the first Saturday in June every year, irrespective of the officeholder's actual birthday.

As part of the occasion, an honours list is published and the King bestows state honours and awards on exceptional members of the public.

Visitors will also encounter a host of cultural shows, exhibitions and performances taking place across Kuala Lumpur throughout the entire day.

Highlights include ceremonies such as the "Trooping of the Colours" by the Malaysian armed forces, which makes spectacular viewing for first-time viewers.

The 13th and current King of Malaysia is Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, who began is reign in December 2006.
